About This Piece
The dove appears as a major theme in Aculina’s work. When doves appear in Picasso’s work, they are rendered in simple, uncomplicated lines. Aculina’s doves, by contrast appear conflicted, entangled. The dove is not a straightforward symbol for Aculina. It is a symbol fraught with tension and possibility. Although it is abstract, as we interact with the painting we see a space begin to emerge. In this painting we see the dove shrouded in blue and purple shadows, walking instead of flying, turning away from a flock of other birds to see the people seeking it in the dark. Will they ever catch it? Hope burns within the doves breast as a yellow and red flame, guiding the people as they stumble towards it. In the far distance we see an open doorway, and realize that all of this interaction takes place inside of a vast dark room, and yet the door is open, the people and the animals can find their way to freedom if they look toward the light. Aculina’s work complicates the easy symbolism of the dove. In her painting we experience the difficult pursuit of freedom, not a symbolic celebration. The symbol is very different from the point of view of those who live without it and seek it.
