In this painting Aculina turns once again to one of her richest subjects, Greek mythology. Greek myth held that every lake and river was governed by a personification of the water, a spirit called a Naiad. These beings were autonomous and intelligent, although they did not have the power of gods, they could grant what gifts the water could bestow. In the abstract space of Aculina’s painting, we see a community of these spirits rendered in a motile, linear pattern. Faces and hands emerge then flow away and disappear. The deep blues and greens don’t specifically color the figures. Instead the color creates a luminous field in which everything is submerged and suspended. The final element is gigantic golden circle which circumscribes the entire interaction. This serves to center the composition as well as demarcate the shore of the lake. The painting creates a sense of rapidly moving forms just beneath the surface. The mythological subject serves as an analysis of the process of an abstract painter. The painter strives to perceive forms that are beyond the reach of our senses; to make real the truths we find instinctually but can’t express.
